GRAND RAPIDS — Deerfield, Ill.-based pharmacy and retailer Walgreen Co. will soon open a store along Grand Rapids' Medical Mile, but don't expect to find gallons of milk, paper towel or other grocery staple items there.
Dubbed “Community, a Walgreens Pharmacy,” the roughly 2,000-square-foot storefront location at the northwest corner of Michigan Street and Union Avenue will offer only specialty pharmacy products and prescription drugs, according to Scott Goldberg, senior media relations manager for the company.
The store, set to open by the end of August, is on the ground floor of 555 Michigan St. NE, a nearly-finished three-story, mixed-use building developed by Grand Rapids-based Third Coast Development LLC.
The firm is also approaching completion of a similar building across Union Avenue at 601 Michigan St. NE.
Together the two buildings will offer 26-market rate apartments. The 555 building already has a certificate of occupancy and four of the eight apartments are leased, according to Max Benedict, a Third Coast Development principal.
The developer is pre-leasing the 601 building, which does not yet have a certificate of occupancy, Benedict added, although he expects to receive it within the next month.
Additionally, the building at 601 Michigan has 3,200 square feet of ground-floor retail, as opposed to the smaller space across the street where Walgreens plans to open.
Benedict said the firm has a letter of intent from an “awesome” tenant for the unleased space, but declined to name the potential user.
