GRAND RAPIDS — SMG, the company that manages DeVos Place Convention Center, DeVos Performance Hall and Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, has merged with AEG Facilities LLC to form a venue management firm called ASM Global.
Rich MacKeigan, regional general manager of DeVos Place and Van Andel Arena, said there is no indication of changes ahead for the Grand Rapids-based venues as a result of the merger.
“The SMG employees that are now ASM Global employees in Grand Rapids will see no changes to payroll, benefits, who their bosses are,” he told MiBiz. “The changes will be of even more resources to better equip them to do their jobs.”
SMG has managed the three Grand Rapids venues for the last 20 years. The Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority (CAA) contracts with SMG for the management of those facilities.
In an August CAA meeting, MacKeigan said the merger “makes (SMG) much stronger internationally” because of AEG’s presence in Europe.
MacKeigan said he is excited about the new president and CEO of ASM Global, Bob Newman, who was previously the president of AEG Facilities and previously worked for SMG in Ohio.
ASM is headquartered in Los Angeles, with key operations based in West Conshohocken, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia. The company also has corporate offices in England, Australia and Brazil. ASM now operates a diversified portfolio of arenas, stadiums, convention and exhibition centers, performing arts centers, theaters and other venues totaling more than 300 facilities on five continents.
SMG owner Onex Corp., a Canadian private equity firm, now owns a 50-percent stake in ASM Global along with AEG.
