Affordable housing development moves forward on Grand Rapids’ west side

GRAND RAPIDS — The Bridge Street corridor west of downtown Grand Rapids continues to serve as a magnet for new housing options.

Nonprofit development group Inner City Christian Federation (ICCF) broke ground on Wednesday on its Stockbridge Apartments project, part of Rockford Construction Co. Inc.’s larger mixed-use project consisting of a Meijer Inc.-owned Bridge Street Market, new office space and market rate housing.

The project will consist of 51 affordable housing units partially financed with Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), 13 market rate units and ground floor retail owned and operated by Rockford Construction, including a new Meijer gas station.

“Over the last several years we’ve heard clearly from Westside residents and leaders about the need for more housing options that are affordable to low and very low income households,” ICCF President and CEO Ryan VerWys said in a statement. “In response to that need, the Stockbridge Apartments are intentionally designed to be a place where people of all walks of life can make a home, a place from which they can contribute to, and benefit from, the vibrancy of the Westside for years to come.”

The Stockbridge project joins the now-leasing Hendrik market rate apartment project also on the larger site, as well as a wide variety of other projects in the development pipeline.

The project, being built by Rockford Construction is expected to be completed and ready for leasing by the end of 2019.

“We’re honored to be a long-time partner of ICCF in support of its vision to create vibrant communities in West Michigan,” stated Rockford Construction CEO Mike VanGessel. “This has been a collaborative effort between multiple community groups. In all that we do at Rockford, we value the importance of building beautiful outcomes that support the needs of our West Michigan communities. We’re proud to be part of delivering more affordable and quality housing to the area through the Stockbridge Apartments.”
