CFOs are never ones to brag, but they’re often the problem-solvers of their respective organizations.

Just look at the honorees in the current crop of winners in the MiBiz CFO of the Year Awards.

When your organization is a public library with a $1 million deficit, you empower the CFO to restructure and get creative in finding funding streams, all with an eye to maintaining services.

If you’re at one of the largest construction firms in the region, you charge your CFO with investing in an internal team to develop new management software to operate the business — and with ensuring your company’s high-profile move to a new headquarters pencils out.

Likewise, at a $550 million steel manufacturer, you turn to your veteran CFO to execute a series of key acquisitions that position the firm to serve new industries and to enter new geographies.

Despite working in very different industries, this year’s winners shared some very similar traits, beyond their humility and knack for solving complex challenges. They helped their organizations work within key parameters to achieve strategic goals. They fulfilled the role of a calm leader who helped their companies navigate and overcome challenging times. And perhaps above all, they balanced all that while still doing their day jobs of managing the numbers and helping others in the company understand the risk and reward inherent in their decision making.

On the following pages, we’ve written more about these CFOs and their achievements, as well as asked them to share some best practices that helped them be successful leaders.

For even more insight into the leadership strategies of these extraordinary financial executives, join us on May 13 in Grand Rapids for our third annual networking and best practices dinner event. Naturally, there will be food and drink, but the real highlight will be an engaging, frank best practices panel discussion featuring the winners in the corporate, middle-market and government/nonprofit categories.

It’s your chance to ask them questions and learn firsthand from their experience.
