SME Gets Hauenstein Work

GRAND RAPIDS — Wolverine Construction Management has awarded the Grand Rapids office of Soil and Materials Engineers Inc. a contract to provide construction materials services for the $60 million Hauenstein Center. During construction, SME is working with Saint Mary’s Health Care and Wolverine Construction Management, providing construction materials services for foundation upgrade, concrete, density, steel, fireproofing tests and reinforcing steel observations.

Designed by HKS Architects, P.C., the four-story, 145,000-square-foot facility will include the new emergency department and will house inpatient and outpatient neurological services, consolidating several neurosciences care facilities under one roof. With the only program of its kind in the country, the center will provide diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson’s and spine disorders.

The Hauenstein Center will be located just west of the Lacks Cancer Center on the former site of Xavier Hall. SME provided environmental consulting for the demolition of Xavier Hall as well as geotechnical engineering and environmental consulting for the Lacks Cancer Center.

SME is based in Plymouth and has offices in Bay City, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Plymouth, Shelby Township and Traverse City, as well as Toledo, Ohio. CQX
